And so the story begins, on the deck of the experimental stealth frigate, the SSV Normandy. A sleek class of its own, the Normandy's stealth drive allowed it to slip in and out of various parts of the galaxy virtually undetected.

You find yourself on this ship, taking it on its first mission for a test run. A simple enough assignment; pick up a newly discovered beacon on Eden Prime and then take it back. What makes this odd is that for what seems like a simple delivery mission, if even that, a Council Spectre has boarded the ship. Nihlus Kryik, a top Turian Spectre, is claiming that he just wants to see how the new ship flies, but some suspect there are other reasons. Currently he is standing at the Combat Information Center, examining a close up hologram of Eden Prime. He's not standing in the back however, choosing to simply stand at the same level as everyone else. Meanwhile, the crew continues to go about their business, although wary of the Spectre.

Celeste knew that there was another reason for this Spectre to be here. This entire mission felt like a test run of some sort, and it was not just about the Normandy. The ship was a beautiful piece of work that had used both top-of-the-line Turian and Human engineering to complete. The stealth system alone even had her mouth watering when it had been explained to her. It was easy for her to push past that awe and remain suspicious of the motivations that had called for her, specifically, to be at the head of this mission. Sometimes she really did despise being moved about like a chess piece by the whim of the Alliance. Celeste had learned quickly to bite her tongue on her misgivings until in private, though. Disobeying a superior officer or questioning their motives in front of the crew? That was a big no-no. Their destination was to be Eden Prime to pick up this beacon. It all sounded like it would be simple, but she had learned to expect the worst and hope for the best. Celeste had put on her N7 armor in the armory before heading back up for the CIC. It was a familiar weight that gave her comfort, and her pistol was attached to her side as well. All she needed now was an explanation for what this mission was really about. The elevator opened up to the CIC where she walked past the galaxy map and the navigator nearby. The pilot’s voice filtered over head, but her eyes were locked onto the cockpit where she could make out the form of the Turian Spectre. Her steps slowed as she stopped beside Nihlus and looked out over the field of stars beyond the pilots monitoring their course. It was still a sight that often left her feeling small and awed; no matter how many times she had seen it over the years. Celeste glanced at the Spectre from her peripheral subtly, wondering what he truly was here for. The official story was never the truth, and she was not an idiot that would swallow whatever the brass gave her. No, this was going to be the start of something big.

[/font] Nihlus greeted her. "I must admit, this vessel has exceeded my expectations so far." Really, the big thing was he hadn't expected it to be so quiet. Ships never really had the roar of the Migrant Fleet, but there was usually at least something. "Excellent mobility, versatility, and one would think it wasn't operational, if not for the crew." Truly impressive.

"Is there something you need?"

It really grated on her nerves that she did not know the reason for this Spectre’s presence. Celeste absolutely loathed being in the dark about things, but she reminded herself to not act rashly. Sometimes it was a constant thing she had to do, since she had been rather reckless as a child. Old habits died hard, but over a decade of military training had suppressed the trait very well. She crossed her arms over her chest and inclined her head towards him to get a better view. He appeared rather unassuming at first, but that was a bad opinion for anyone to form. It would serve him well if any of his opponents chose to underestimate him. This should have been a simple hit-and-run mission, so why did they need Nihlus? Nothing could ever be simple for once where she was concerned, could it? “It is a ship to marvel. Who knew something like this could be made? The drive core alone is an engineering feat. The hum is so low you have to listen for it.” The admiration in her voice was clear for anyone to hear. Celeste believed the Normandy to be a beauty, and the size of her was meant for stealth and speed. They were qualities she valued highly, so why would she not be impressed? She did not want to get too distracted by the niceties, though. Antagonizing him was far from her goal, but she needed to know why he was here. “I’m just curious about your presence. Can’t say I’ve ever met a Spectre before. Your group is certainly impressive, but I hardly see why a hit-and-run mission like this would need someone so high ranked to oversee it.” Her tone was kept low so no one would overhear them, and she made sure not to sound accusing. Questioning orders was not something she did lightly, but this entire thing screamed ‘set-up’ to her.

[/font] He quipped, "Plenty of Spectres enjoy hiding in plain sight." He himself did it a few times. From what Nihlus had learned, more often than not, Spectres had a very good reason to announce their presence. "But the Council has their reasons for sending me. This vessel represents not only military opportunities, but diplomatic opportunities." And so far, he had not told a lie.

"Uh, Captain Anderson? We have a problem. It might be best if you headed to the Comm Room." A voice sounded over the comm without warning.

Even Nihlus seemed surprised at that, looking up for a moment before looking back at Celeste. "I imagine your Captain won't mind me intruding. I don't expect him to mind your presence either." He spoke, turning on his heel and towards the Comm Room. Nihlus knew of Anderson. A prestigious man, and would no doubt fill Celeste on the true nature of this mission.

Perhaps she had met a Spectre without realizing it, but this would be her first time in an official capacity. Celeste was curious to see just how skilled Nihlus was on this mission, if he really was needed for a retrieval. They were supposed to be the very best of the Council species, and they worked under their own authority for the most part. Being above the law was a rather dangerous line to walk, though. “A fair point. Do they really? I suppose I’ll have to believe the official story given, then,” she replied with a slight smile. It was quite obvious that his words were not believed by her in the least, but she was not going to push it while they were surrounded by the crew. The pilot’s voice sounded over the comm, and she glanced upward with a quirked brow. Now what did Anderson have to worry about? Celeste had a bad feeling about this, and her instincts were usually right about this sort of thing. No doubt her presence would be needed by the Captain, since she had been appointed the XO of the Normandy. It would be her running the ground team to pick up this objective, right? She cast a cursory glance at Nihlus before shrugging idly. She followed in step with him as she made her way to the Comm Room. It had to be a serious development, and she wanted to know what it was. “Captain? Is everything alright? Have the parameters changed?” she asked the moment they were in the relative privacy of the room. Her brow furrowed as she took in a few of the disturbing images on the holo-screen. What in the lord’s name was going on? Celeste could feel her patience beginning to waver at all of this secrecy and change. Would she now be told the truth of what this mission to Eden Prime was really about?

[/font] He rubbed his temples, this was clearly not planned. At all. "You already know that this was a mission to pick up a Prothean Beacon that was uncovered but..."

"I believe what Anderson wishes to say is that with changed parameters, comes changed information." Nihlus interceded.

"Right. Shepard, Nihlus is here for more than the Beacon. Specifically, he's here to look at you."

Nihlus only nodded in affirmation to confirm Anderson's words. While not the way he wished things would go, nor was he thrilled about their first mission together being like this, he saw it as an opportunity. A chance to defend the innocent and fight off a sudden invasion. The Spectre imagined it would be all too familiar to Celeste.

Celeste stared at the feed with growing dismay, but her expression only became more grim. It looked like hell had decided to show up on Eden Prime. What was going on down there? The sound of gunfire rang within her ears, but she paused on what had to be the strangest looking ship she had ever seen. Her brow furrowed as she took in the design, and it resembled a squid at a certain angle. What in seven hells was it? It was nothing human, and she was quite sure none of the other races had ever designed something like it. “What in the world…?” she muttered to herself. This mission had just become that much more dangerous, but hopefully it would not be anything she had never faced before. Her gaze turned from the video feed to Anderson with a quirked brow. It still unnerved her that she was to be sent to pick up a Prothean Beacon. The beacon on Mars alone had been a trove of information to kickstart the human race into the galactic community. Changed information, though? Was this the real reason for Nihlus’ presence, then? For the first time in a long while her composure cracked at the reveal that the Spectre was here to look at her. It did not take long for her to piece the information together, and she looked to the Turian with incredulity on her features. “This was all a pretense, then. You’re looking at me as a possible Spectre canidate?” A large part of her found it hard to believe, but it made sense. The Alliance had been pushing for more influence with the Council, and the best way was to get one of their own onto the Spectres. They wanted a seat with the rest of the Council as well. Humanity certainly did not lack for initiative. Celeste looked to Anderson as a hint of self doubt crept over her. “Why me? How long has this plan been in motion?” The man had been a mentor to her for awhile now, but she felt somewhat angered that this had been planned without her input. It was certainly an honor that she was being considered for such a high position, but taking center stage for all of the galaxy to see unnerved her to the core.

[/i] here to oversee the first voyage of the Normandy and I really am here to help pick up the beacon."[/font] Nihlus immediately spoke up. "I am not guilty of lying, Shepard. I am only guilty of not saying everything." Really, pretense? Nihlus may have been a Spectre, but he was still a Turian! As if he would be caught lying.

Anderson just looked at Nihlus, clearly not really sure if he was buying that.

Nihlus stared right back at Anderson for a moment. It was as if for a couple seconds, the two were waging some sort of mental war with each other. "But, you are perceptive. You are indeed the prime candidate for a Human Spectre." But she had other questions, did she not? Nihlus placed his arms behind his back, one hand gripping a wrist. "While I was given two other potential candidates to look at if I wished, you stood out the most."

"To give you an idea of how high you stand above the rest, Shepard? One of the other candidates was Hawke. When we suggested him it was the closest I've ever seen Admiral Hackett come to laughing." Anderson remarked, not really thinking all that highly of the others. Well, no. Anderson respected Revan.

"Laughing? It looked more like a smirk to me. I thought he was approving." Nihlus seemed baffled.

"That was your first time meeting him."

"Yes, well. You are easily my ideal candidate, as it stands. Your courage and heroism during the Blitz showed a burning desire for justice, and a strong conviction to protect the innocent. Anyone would be proud to call someone like that an ally." Nihlus turned his attention back to Celeste once more. "I had intended to work with you for several missions but..." Nihlus trailed off. "I suppose we can shorten it if you show me the same fire you showed on Elysium."

It was time to get ready. "I have a feeling Eden Prime could use that right now. I'm heading down to the hangar. Get ready, should you accept, and come talk to me. We can discuss this more after we clear out Eden Prime, if you so wish."

With that, Nihlus had to cut things short. Walking at a much brisker pace, he hurried down towards the hangar. It seemed that he was taking this seriously. It also looked like he was actually looking forward to this somewhat.

Anderson meanwhile, looked back at Celeste. "It's up to you, Shepard. But this would be a big step for humanity. It would bring us that much closer to having a seat on the council. You know we've been fighting for that for a long time."

Reaching out, he patted Celeste on the shoulder. "That being said, you're going down there. Like it or not. You may be able to refuse becoming a Spectre, but there are people down there that need you. You can't refuse them. Understood?" His gaze, despite his tone, seemed much softer. He was always nice to Celeste, he figured.

Celeste was familiar with the concept of only emitting part of the truth to portray it as a whole. Nevertheless, it had been a plot to hide the real motivations of this mission. It was more than testing the Normandy and picking up this Prothean Beacon. Both of these events were of great import, but it was setting the stage to see if she had what it took to be a Spectre. She had been a marine for over a decade now, and she obeyed her orders without questioning them for the most part. The last few years of her life had propelled her out of anonymity, though. Celeste was not just another soldier in the Alliance. No, she was their poster girl for humanity’s advancement with the rest of Council space. She remained silent as she listened to the both of them. Two other potential candidates had been offered as well? Her expression became unnervingly blank when Revan and Hawke were mentioned. Celeste did not know the former all that well, but she had spent the last few years forcing herself not to think of the latter. His reputation after the hellish aftermath of Torfan had left him an enemy to the Batarians and viewed as a butcher by many others. She looked past the two as she focused on the pictures that lingered on the screen. This was what she was going to be tested against? Unknown mission parameters were nothing new to her, but she had a gut feeling this would push her to her limit. “I did what I had to do,” she replied shortly. Elysium was not something she liked to talk about often, because it had painted her as this savior or saint to so many people. All she remembered was the constant fear and adrenaline as she fought to make sure the colony would fight back against the Batarians. Celeste did bow her head in respect for his words, though. It was a high compliment coming from a Spectre that he looked on her previous mission success so highly. Nihlus soon left to get ready in the hangar, which left her alone with Anderson to think all of this through. “I never said I wasn’t going through with this mission, sir. I’ll do it to help the colonists down there and to rescue anyone I can. I don’t know what to think about this Spectre position, if I even get it, but I won’t let you down. Keep in contact and let me know if anything changes.” Celeste stood at attention and saluted the Captain before leaving the comm room behind. Her emotions were carefully locked away to think about after the mission was over. Now she was headed down for the hangar to complete this mission whatever the outcome.

[/font] And just like that, the parts of the omni-tool faded, leaving only an armored Turian arm. Omni-Tools really were a wonderful thing.

However, noticing that Celeste was there, Nihlus turned his attention to her, an apologetic look on his face. Well, at least as much as could be made for a Turian. "Shepard, good to see you're still here. I apologize that we can't continue our conversation right now. The situation has gone critical. There are reports of synthetics, Geth specifically, in the area."

Calling up his omni-tool for a moment, he seemed to be inspecting it. "Normally, I'd suggest we both drop and rush towards the beacon, but new intel complicates the matter." He spoke, not once taking his eyes off his omni-tool. Calling it off, he turned back to Celeste. "Artillery fire has managed to unearth something. We think it might be a stasis pod. Reports are it's still active too." A most interesting find. He wondered what was inside.

As the hangar door opened, Nihlus unholstered his shotgun and inspected it. The last thing he needed was for this thing to fail, or something. "I move faster on my own. So I'll land and secure the pod." He held his shotgun up, squinting his gaze at it before turning back to Celeste, satisfied. "You will land a little later and secure the beacon. See about rallying the remaining forces as well. You're a hero, Shepard. No doubt your presence will inspire the colonists."

He took a few steps towards the edge, getting ready for a running jump. "After that, I'll try and move the pod over to your position and we can leave. You need to hold out until then." He didn't wait for a confirmation. It was time to go.

Getting a running start, he jumped out the hangar as it glided only a few hundred feet above Eden Prime.

Celeste was able to hear the tail end of a conversation the Spectre was having, but she was unsure of whether to question it or not. It did seem to pertain to the mission, though. She busied herself with going to her locker to get out her helmet to finish getting ready. It would be rather idiotic of her to forgo her helmet when she was likely heading into a combat zone. Icy eyes flickered to Nihlus as her slim brow quirked at the mention of Geth. They were planet side now? As far as she knew, they did not leave the Perseus Veil. This mission was turning into several shades of unexpected and dangerous now. “I thought they didn’t leave the Veil. Why would they be on a human colony world? Are they after the beacon as well?” she mused quietly. What would the Geth want with a Prothean Beacon? Was it for the data inside? Her speculations would have to wait until she had enough information to act out on. A low whistle escaped her at the reveal of a stasis pod as well for Nihlus to contemplate. Eden Prime held more secrets than previously known. It looked like this world had once been an outpost or colony world of the Protheans with everything now going on. What were the odds? “Sounds like a plan, then. Contact me if anything changes, though. Well, we’ll see about that when I get down there.” No doubt there would be survivors, but she disliked asking civilians to place themselves in harms way. There may be little choice if she was doing this on her own and she desperately needed the help. Anyone that knew how to use a gun and dodge an attack would be welcome help. Celeste would find out how bad it was once she was down there herself, though. She placed her helmet on and felt the seals close to let her know it was on securely. All that could be seen were her eyes through the visor, but the blue streak running down the side of her arm was custom to her. “Got it. Good luck, then.” She watched as he jumped from the hangar to the ground below before she waited a few more minutes until she was signaled to do the same. Her pistol was grasped firmly in her hand as she ran from the hangar and landed on the ground gracefully. Celeste glanced up at the bloody sky with a slight grimace before setting out to see how bad the situation was.

Breathe. Inhale. Exhale. Calm down. Count back from four. It seemed to all happen in a flash. The very king of the underworld's database, the black market's library, Red himself, had been in danger. He was following a lead when death had just reigned upon the lands of Eden Prime. It was a lucky lead, but one that would inevitably lead him into the cluster-fuck of Eden Prime. Usually, that wasn't a term used for the planet but the growing threat of invading Geth had really given it a U-Turn. Bodies had been strewn out everywhere, mercilessly killed by the machines.

The single-eyed automatons had gunned them down without thought, truly showing their mechanical worth as beings of destruction. However, Red did not think that way. No, everyone else would be thinking that way. They could be useful, deadly units of war. However, his power can only extend so far. In fact, he was not very powerful at all. He was a growing power, breeding with information in order to delay expansion but ultimately exponentially expand.

Four. Red hid behind a few crates with his pistol in hand, loaded to take down whatever machine caught his ire. While he was not the best shot, he could certainly take down at least a few. Steps could be heard at a distance, and the growing anxiety had almost taken him. However, he was raised by a Krogan, and so he was not a green-horn to intense situations. In fact, the Krogan surrounded him in death and destruction, even if unintentional. The sound of hydraulics had alerted the Shadow Broker, awaited for those steps to near, hearing a supposed single geth. Readying his pistol, he snuck around the crates to form a flank on the machina. Three.

Peeking around the corner, he saw the geth in its prime. No scrapes, no open wires. It was in perfect condition, and it was his duty to play a hero this time. It was his duty to seem like a bystander only holding a pistol and listening to his prideful survival instincts. Two. Crouched down low, he slowly crept up on the machine as it moved over to his previous location. One. The gun loaded with Armor Piercing Ammo, Red had slowly squeezed the trigger. As it slid back, ready to fire for him, he saw it jerk and turn towards him. Exhaling, the gun popped off twice in the geth's head. It wasn't enough to down it, but it was enough to cause it to stumble after much damage to the head.

It was a machine, the stumble was purely recoil and if it can still function it will keep going. One more shot downed the automaton, malfunctioning and convulsing from the scrambled code. Looking down at it, Red had wondered what he could do with the machine that might benefit him. Crouching by it, he started to dissect its body for any useful parts. Seeing as how it had a humanoid appearance, the Shadow Broker assumed its head would contain parts that might prove to be valuable sources of information. However, until he was sure nothing could track him, he couldn't lead the part into the domain of his ship even if it was hidden. Narrowing the search area for the Shadow Broker wasn't smart.

Taking the CNS-equivalent bit of the geth, Red had noticed trembling scientists coming from the shadows after watching him destroy the geth. "I can't comfort you, but it's dead. That one at least." Removing a cigarette from his pocket, Red began to smoke to calm his nerves. He had a low, stern voice that naturally boomed but at the same time, had a monotone volume. Intimidating. "I can't promise your survival, but I'd suggest staying low, cutting around corners outside of their formation, and getting to safety. This planet's damned if there isn't some kind of heavy-duty infantry coming." It was obvious to anyone, all the people who died were slaughtered effortlessly.

Red had to do something to keep up appearances, because someone important was going to watch the death of a planet's population. He had to be there, he had to watch. Walking away after holstering his pistol, the smoking Broker had just left the scientists to their own survival. They weren't the only scientists in hiding, as others were clawing at survival and demanding protection from evil. Seeing a pod-shaped building, he entered in hopes of finding some sort of radio that can transmit. A cry for help should attract the Geth and allow him to leave as quickly as could be. It would kill those in the area, but machines pick up other machines -- in his assumption -- and he needed a way around. It was nothing but garbage, however there was indeed a canister of sorts that used a keypad.

Easily accessible with the right technological persuasion. Picking at the keypad he used his omni-tool to hack the keypad. It was quite easy, in fact. This probably meant he was getting either nothing or very little. It was a simple arrangement of coding and a scrambling program that didn't really do so with proficient speed or randomness. It's looking pretty good, not really surrounded. I'm liking these odds for survival. Whatever was in the canister would be removed quickly if anything was there at all, for he had to rush into cover. A wide window would reveal a few geth coming his way, and his pistol was not optimal for taking on multiple at once. Damn. Keep quiet, Adam.

The sight of the corpses and the stench of blood were the first things Celeste noticed. Such surroundings did not faze her, but she still lamented the loss of life. Why were the Geth here on Eden Prime? It was clear that they would not be taking hostages, and this entire colony was now a battle zone. Her first priority was to secure the beacon, but she would attempt to round of any survivors on her way. In a way, this did remind her of Elysium. There would be no rallying cry to defend the burning colony from Batarians, though. A curse escaped her when several Geth landed barely a minute after she had touched ground. This was why a ground squad would have been useful, but it looked like she was on her own. Celeste had been on solo missions enough times to know when to dodge roll into cover. The large rock provided safety from the shots fired at her. Her lips were pursed into a harsh scowl, but it would not be seen through her helmet. Her pistol had been drawn and was held tightly within her grasp as she calculated her options. Why deplete her energy by using her biotics? No doubt there would be far worse foes the closer she got to the beacon. Celeste rose from her cover and quickly shot down two of the Geth sentries with a few well placed shots. The third one took fire at her, which she avoided by going back into cover. It would be a slow progress as she took her chance in the pause to run to the next cover. Was there anyone nearby at all in this mayhem? She was trying to keep an eye out for survivors to warn them off, but all she could do was avoid the return fire from the remaining Geth and the corpses around her. So much for an easy grab-and-go mission.

Nila took up cover near one of the rocky hills that dotted this place, her avenger rifle perched against a rock as she scouted the area with her cross-hairs. It wasn’t much by way of cover, but it worked. A moment of quiet having been found, she found herself thinking back to what brought her here- a lead of sorts from one of the Alliance Officers she’d found, even if she didn’t particularly trust the information. A beacon, and whispers of Geth closing in, was the reason she wasn’t in her chair, directing Cerberus troops around. So, after taking hold of a scientific vessel, she flew her way towards the planet’s surface in an effort to check it out. She didn’t like what she found; but it didn’t really come to a surprise, either.

Geth had done quite a bit of damage to this place, despite only being there a short time. Bodies and bits of destruction could be found; she could even see pistols and assorted weapons as if the scientists tried to put up a fight. But they were going up against particularly ruthless machines, and as much as she hated it, she knew they didn’t, nor wouldn’t have a chance. Nila brought herself back to the present then, remembering the reason she was here in the first place. Taking another sweep through her cross-hairs, she came upon a small group of Geth converging on a single point. She took aim, lining up her cross-hairs against the one in front. A breath, she held it for a second as she gently pulled the trigger, lining up the shot while her mind blazed through years of sniper training.

And then she let it go, along with the bullet, which shattered what could have been called its head as it seemingly convulsed for a moment before regaining its bearings. An annoyed twitch of her eye, she fired off two more rounds, dropping it. ‘Damn. These metal bastards are made better than I thought.'  She thought to herself and she pressed towards the rock more securely. She’d have to give those alien bastards credit for making such a fine piece of scrap metal if she survived this.

There was only one Sentry left for her to take down, which would be simply enough. Their defense was quite lacking if she could take them out with only a few well aimed shots with her pistol. Celeste would not count on them to be the only enemies she would encounter, though. No doubt there were even tougher Geth about as she got closer to the beacon, and who knew what else was here? Someone had to be giving them order, because Geth did not leave the Veil without reason. Inhaling deeply, she leaned out from her cover to shoot down the last remaining Sentry. It short circuited before falling over in disrepair. A part of her almost felt guilty about doing so, since they were A.I. with a semblance of life. The soldier in her locked away those emotions as she ran from her cover to move on ahead. The scenery only became more gruesome as she progressed. God, who would be cruel enough to kill an entire colony just for the beacon? Lives had been lost for less, though. Celeste sincerely hoped she would come across some survivors, but she could not see anyone. Her priority was making it to the beacon, so she would not stray from her set path. How was Nihlus faring? Had he even made it to the pod? Her annoyance flared at the lack of radio contact to at least give her a status update. Were Spectres always so lone wolf with her missions? She had done many solo missions, but she preferred working with a squad than working above the law and answering to nearly no one. That did not matter right now. Celeste was not a Spectre, and she was going to make sure no one took that beacon from her.

As for Celeste. As she advanced through the area, sentries no longer an issue for the moment, she came upon a set of hubs. Small buildings that had been sealed shut for the moment. While human bodies were still littering the area, there seemed to be no real Geth nearby. Complimenting the hubs was a small raised platform of metal. Crates and more bodies littered it as well. It could be a place to maybe catch up and catch her breath. Well, maybe.

If it weren't for the dead Turian Spectre lying nearby, anyway.
